Working with the community to reduce loneliness and break down isolation with older residents of Whitlawburn and Springhall

The Age Active Seniors Group was formed in 2018 from a group of local residents from Whitlawburn and Springhall. Working in partnership with Springhall Community Resource Group, its aims are to combat social isolation and loneliness amongst the over 50s and provide much needed peer support and reassurance on a range of common experiences and issues (eg health, bereavement, over 50 entitlements etc).

The group initially have funding through Our Place to develop and deliver a three-year programme (2018 – 2021) of regular activities and initiatives available to all over 50s in Whitlawburn and Springhall.

The fortnightly programme includes a range of activities and social and connecting opportunities including bingo, arts and crafts, fitness and exercise classes, awareness raising information sessions on topics such as benefits and housing issues, as well as training on identified issues such as cooking on a budget, personal safety and first aid.

“I love coming to this wee day and have learnt that there are people like me throughout the scheme, quite lonely and on their own for days on end, nice to know it’s not just me”
